Mr Lee on the left personally drove us back to our hotel that night |
The few early birds managed a quick trip to the beach this
morning. Returning later for a second breakfast with the rest, everyone enjoyed
a leisurely morning before riding out to Taitung station.
Arriving at the train station after an easy 6 km of cranking,
some of us were still unloading our bikes when Alvin and Papa Mike bounced out
from the station with panic written all over their faces. We were about to miss
our train unless we enter a plea with the station master. Dashing across the
whole 200 yards to his office, Claudine was taken aback by Papa’s agility. He doesn’t
seemed to be challenged by the force of gravity.
Our plea fell on deaf ears. We missed our train schedule.
However, we won a bigger case when a special coach for bicycles was coupled to
a later train for us! Apparently, adhering strictly to standard operating
procedure, we were denied the earlier train as it does not cater to full sized
bicycles.
As we had a few hours to kill before our train schedule, we
decided to explore the area. Strangely, the business center came to an end 500
m away from the train station. Beyond were scattered housing.

At the side lane, near Yanwan prison |
Leaving civilization, we were riding on a lonely stretch for
a short distance before coming face to face with Yanwan prison. Thankfully,
Chief Alvin did not led us in! Instead, we rode along it’s perimeters before
coming to Peinandazhen Riverside Park. The park, despite it’s greenery was set
against a stark and harsh river bed, laid bare by the dry season. Framed by a
rocky mountain range, the whole sight spelt U.G.L.Y.!

Ellie |
However, this park had a special place in Claudine’s heart
for this is where she found Ellie, dirty and abandoned beside a planter box,
right under a tree. It took a lot of whacking to get the first layer of dirt
off her. But by the time we boarded the train for Kaoshiung, Ellie was all washed
and cleaned, thanks to the Chii Lih hotel’s toilet, near Sunny CafĂ© where we spent the
rest of our afternoon waiting for our train.
