AST RIDE ... Another Side of Thailand (25 December 2018 to 1 January 2019) : Day 1 - Taiping to Kuala Sepetang

It's Christmas!!!
These bikes sure are visible in the dark!

Sometimes, when you look back at old photos, you wondered what had made them laugh so happily. Tragically, Philip passed away on January 18, just weeks after the trip.
Cheers to you, Philip Sim.

HO HO HO! Today is Christmas and embracing the spirit of the Light, VT and CL arrived at Louis Hotel blinking like a Christmas tree! Indoors, they found Mr Lim and Philip chatting away at the coffee table whilst Jac was just coming out of a semi-conscious state by the sofa!

These guys sure look fresh despite a rough night

It had been a hard night for all 3. The 2 men had spent a long night travelling in a bus from JB while Jac, who had boarded the ETS from KL, had arrived in the wee hours of the morning. We wondered which was worst…. spending a night in a refrigerator with wheels or finding yourself locked out of a hotel at 3 am?

It was such that whilst Bernie and Suzie were roaring to begin the ride as both were awaken by the sound of motorboats going out to sea, the 3 zombies from Louis Hotel were whisked off to Restoran Kakak for a bowl of chicken noodle soup. None for “homeless” Jac who had taken wantan mee from Casual Market while locked out.

After breakfast, the noodle kakis hurried back to Louis Hotel to meet up with Bernie and Suzie who had rode all the way from Kuala Sepetang. At the same time, plans for a short ride around the Lake Gardens had to be shelved as the Singapore team were arriving soon.

Our timing was almost as good as German precision for as soon as we turned left at the traffic lights, the bus from Singapore screeched to a stop hence the welcoming committee were all ready to take on their duties! Greetings were exchanged, short of a gift exchange though everyone eventually received small gifts from Jac on this Yuletide.

Wanting to start our ride, we couldn’t! A contrite Rene had to run across the street to KFC, NOT for chicken but to use their toilets. She left some items there…both biodegradable and non-biodegradable!!!

The ride to Kuala Sepetang via the old railway tracks went smoothly. The tracks were long gone and the path widened from Claudine and VT’s last visit in January 2018.

Even though it was Christmas, business was as usual in the fishing village. The once, sleepy fishing village is seeing more tourists nowadays with social media exposure. What with a mangrove forest, charcoal kilns, river tours, eagle watch, fireflies tours, kelong visits and even the occasional dolphin sightings…the tourists will come by the throngs!

We had meant to take a short tour to the Lake Gardens but it started to rain heavily as soon as we returned to Louis Hotel. Sparing Claudine the agony of a wet ride, VT had rode home alone, returning with the car to take her home for a shower. Somehow, he managed to escape the rain!

That evening, everyone were cramped into the Toyota Fortuner and driven to Restaurant Kwai Lerk aka Happy. Indeed it was a happy night where everyone played the roulette over the Lazy Susan. They had to share their thoughts if the chopstick points to them when the turntable stops!

Out of boredom, we placed bets on the dinner bill. Jac won the closest bet at RM155. The total bill came to RM157!
